When looking for your first garage door, it’s easy to assume that there’s not much variation. They all need to be big enough to let a car in and open and close with minimal fuss. Surely, one garage door is much the same as the next? Well, while they all have a similar basic function, the actual design can vary. There are multiple variations out there and it can be confusing if you’re not familiar with them. Here at Look Garage Doors, we have three distinct types to choose from and thought we’d take some time to explain them all. Read on to learn more about the different types of garage doors.
Up & Over Garage Doors
Let’s start with a classic. Up And Over garage doors are a traditional style and have been used in UK homes and businesses for decades now. They consist of a single rectangular door slab and are easy to operate; you take hold of the handle and pull. The door is lifted and flips horizontally, sliding into a bracket in the ceiling of the garage. The up-and-over design is ideal for anyone that wants an unfussy, no-nonsense garage door. While they’re based on an old style though, they do benefit from modern technology. They’re fitted with up-to-date locking mechanisms and are built to withstand attempted break-ins. They don’t weigh too much and are easy to lift, but if you need some help operating them, they can be fitted with remote controls. This is also good news for anyone that can’t be bothered to get out of their car to open the garage. If you want an old fashioned garage door with a few modern bells and whistles, this is the one for you.
Roller Doors
For a slightly more contemporary design, you may prefer Roller Doors. These consist of sheets of aluminium which, as the name suggests, roll up and down from a cassette mounted in the ceiling. They take up less space than up-and-over doors and are perfect for those who prefer to keep their fixtures discreet. Roller garage doors are surprisingly tough too. Occasionally, we encounter people that assume they’re more flimsy, but they can withstand severe weather and attempted break-ins just as well as their cousins. Aluminium is a comparatively light metal but it’s almost as strong as steel, so any intruders will have a very hard time forcing their way in. And yes, they can be upgraded for remote and automated access as well. This style is widely used for commercial garage doors but it’s popular in domestic properties too.
Sectional Doors
Lastly, there are Sectional Doors. These consist of several folding panels of metal and like up-and-over doors, slide into a bracket mounted in the garage ceiling. They have a more elegant aesthetic and could be considered the most modern type of garage door. Sectional doors have risen in popularity in recent years and are widely used in new builds. It’s also worth mentioning that they’re a very versatile design. Sectional doors can be fitted with windows, so we’d recommend them if you want to let the daylight in. They can also be adjusted for size and fitted in smaller garages. If you’ve got less room to work with, a sectional door could be just the thing. These are the three main garage door types but don’t think your options are limited. All of our garage doors can be customised for different sizes and colour schemes, so you’re bound to find something that matches your personality. And if you want to add a definitive twenty-first-century finishing touch, it’s worth considering automation as well.
